The International Short Film Festival Oberhausen has published its new distribution catalogue for 2010. The list features 50 new acquisitions, most of them prize-winning films and outstanding titles from the current festival programme, but also some treasures cherry-picked from Oberhausen’s short film archive. The films are available individually or as ready-to-screen programmes: for example the Competition Selection 2010, the films of Herbert Fritsch, or the Sarajevo Documentary School line-up, which lets viewers revisit the best works from the big hit special at the 2009 Oberhausen festival. What’s more, the festival has announced that it will now present its successful short-film touring programme “Oberhausen on Tour” every year starting in 2011.
“When it comes to demonstrating the scope and potency of short film, nobody does it quite like Oberhausen,” noted Sight & Sound in its review of the 56th Festival. In keeping with this standing, Oberhausen’s new distribution slate is not so much about short film as an intro to the main feature at the cinema but focuses instead on short film reels as a full evening’s entertainment. To be found in the catalogue are acclaimed works such as Magnus Bärtå’s “Madame & Little Boy”, winner of the Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen in 2010, artists’ films like Jaan Toomik’s “Oleg” (2010), and also some new discoveries including the young Finnish director Hannaleena Hauru with her short feature “Catching” (2010). The music video programme with the candidates for this year’s MuVi Award has by now become a fixed feature of the catalogue and is often one of the most popular selections in distribution.
Along with current works, the catalogue provides an opportunity to rediscover gems from the Oberhausen festival’s one-of-a-kind archive. A programme of works from the Sarajevo Documentary School acts as a flagship spotlighting the rich short film tradition in former Yugoslavia, one that is well represented in the festival archive and distribution offerings.
In early 2011 the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen will once again send a selection of works from the catalogue off on a road trip through Europe in “Oberhausen on Tour”. Venues that decide by the end of December 2010 to present at least two programmes in 2011 can book them at a special discounted rate.
