Sebestyén Kodolányi, archive director of the Béla Balázs Studio (BBS) in Budapest
Starting in the early 1960s, the Béla Balázs Studio for young talent was a germ cell for experimental and innovative cinema in Hungary. Conceived exclusively to promote experimentation amongst up and coming filmmakers, the state-sponsored BBS was unique on the international film scene. Among the directors to emerge from the BBS from the mid-1960s onward were István Szabó, Istvan Gaál, Judit Elek, Pál Gábor and Sándor Sara.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the studio in 2009, Sebestyén Kodolányi curated the exhibition and retrospective BBS 50. Others Voices, Other Rooms. Attempt(s) at Reconstruction at Budapest’s Mücsarnok art space.
