The community of Africville, settled by formerly enslaved people and Black loyalists in Canada, was underserved and then razed by the provincial government in the 1960s under the guise of ‘urban renewal’. Filmmaker Sylvia Hamilton narrates this documentary about the enduring Black communities who survive, thrive and continue to protest for reparations. The documentary’s a capella score is performed by the musical group For The Moment – singing storytellers of Nova Scotia’s Black oral histories.
