Emshwiller was one of the representatives of experimental American films in the 1960s whom Vogel respected the most. He chose Relativity for the 1967 Oberhausen festival. The festival coyly moved it to the midnight slot because of its supposedly ‘pornographic’ images, then penitently awarded it the Preis für den verkannten Film (Prize for the Misjudged Film). ‘The Emshwiller Glide is decidedly a new dance step for the cinema-minded.’ (Parker Tyler on Relativity)
