Cecil M. Hepworth: Floral Parade of Lady Cyclists
Eadweard Muybridge repeatedly shot women for his series in such a way that the respective movement in front of the camera only provided the alibi for showing them naked. The Lumière company's operators only showed women at sporting events and activities in exceptional cases, for example when they were playing boules with men. Early shots of women playing sport are therefore a rarity. At the end of the 19th century, Cecil M. Hepworth filmed women riding bicycles on several occasions. In 1899, he filmed women at a "Floral Parade" in London, which was organized by the "Catford Cycling Club". The first shot, which lasts 86 seconds, shows many women riding past, while the second, shorter shot captures women riding a slalom on a marked course.
