Eadweard Muybridge: The Attitudes of Animals in Motion (92-118 Athletes)
In the second half of the 19th century, the new optochemical recording process of photography was particularly popular for recording and reproducing processes that the eye alone was unable to perceive accurately. These processes included the fast movements of sport. The railroad entrepreneur Leland Stanford, who also owed his fortune to the deaths of countless Chinese seasonal workers, paid the photographer Eadweard Muybridge to prove with his series-connected apparatus that a horse lifted all four hooves from the ground at a gallop. Muybridge then recorded many other movements of animals and people with his chronophotography. Women were shown almost exclusively doing housework. Men were mainly recorded during sporting exercises, as the compilation of chronophotographs from the series "Animal Locomotion" (1987) proves.
