From my window is a series for which artists and filmmakers are invited to contribute a short video letter or statement, a small window on their current situation and how they are living through this time; to be presented together with a program of films that are pertinent to the moment, and that are culled from material freely accessible online.

Emily Jacir wrote the following message to contextualise her video:

March 24, 2020 On January 30th the first Coronavirus cases appeared in Rome, and Italy suspended all flights from China. On that day I wrote a first message to my family very worried. I looked for facemasks, but there were no masks to be found anywhere in Rome. On February 2nd, I traveled to Lausanne for work. On my way back, I managed to find masks at the train station in Lausanne, and bought what I thought would be enough at the time – 10 masks. I wore a mask for the first time on Feb 4 on the train back to Milano. But by February 28th the cases in Italy rose to 650 and I was unable to return to Bethlehem and got stuck in Rome. On February 29th cases rise to 1128 with 29 people dead. By March 7, Italy is reporting more deaths from the virus than any other country in the world. Coronavirus deaths jump to 197 - the largest daily increase. On March 8 we reach 6387 coronavirus cases, that’s 1326 more then the day before with 366 dead.

I still cannot get back to Bethlehem, which as of 48 hours ago, is also under lockdown. I have been without any human contact since March 1st. I am separated from my family and my dogs. I am alone in a flat with one window, and that window is my only access to the outside world. That window has become my world. On March 12. I film out my only window for the first time, coming to terms with the fact that I face a wall whose simulacra of two windows only emphasize isolation. Any hoped for human contact with people here, will have to come sideways.

24. März 2020 Am 30. Januar traten in Rom die ersten Fälle des Coronavirus auf, und Italien setzte alle Flüge aus China aus. An diesem Tag schrieb ich eine erste Nachricht an meine Familie, die sehr besorgt war. Ich suchte nach Gesichtsmasken, aber es waren nirgendwo in Rom Masken zu finden. Am 2. Februar reiste ich zur Arbeit nach Lausanne. Auf dem Rückweg gelang es mir, am Bahnhof in Lausanne Masken zu finden, und ich kaufte, was ich damals dachte, dass es genug sein würde - 10 Masken. Ich trug zum ersten Mal eine Maske am 4. Februar im Zug zurück nach Mailand. Aber bis zum 28. Februar stiegen die Fälle in Italien auf 650 an und ich konnte nicht nach Bethlehem zurückkehren und saß in Rom fest. Am 29. Februar steigen die Fälle auf 1128 mit 29 Toten. Bis zum 7. März meldet Italien mehr Todesfälle durch das Virus als jedes andere Land der Welt. Die Zahl der Coronavirus-Todesfälle springt auf 197 - der größte tägliche Anstieg. Am 8. März erreichen wir 6387 Coronavirus-Fälle, das sind 1326 mehr als am Vortag mit 366 Toten.

Ich kann immer noch nicht zurück nach Bethlehem, das seit 48 Stunden ebenfalls abgeriegelt ist. Ich bin seit dem 1. März ohne jeglichen menschlichen Kontakt. Ich bin von meiner Familie und meinen Hunden getrennt. Ich bin allein in einer Wohnung mit einem Fenster, und dieses Fenster ist mein einziger Zugang zur Außenwelt. Dieses Fenster ist zu meiner Welt geworden. Am 12. März. filme ich zum ersten Mal aus meinem einzigen Fenster und finde mich mit der Tatsache ab, dass ich vor einer Wand stehe, deren Simulakrum aus zwei Fenstern die Isolation nur noch verstärkt. Jeder erhoffte menschliche Kontakt mit den Menschen hier, wird seitlich kommen müssen.
