The Spirit Moves - Brooklyn Mambo Competition (1950er)
The Spirit Moves: A History of Black Social Dance on Film, 1900-1986 ist ein Dokumentarfilm von Mura Dehn, der die Entwicklung des afro-amerikanischen Gesellschaftstanzes während des größten Teils des 20. Jahrhunderts aufzeichnet. In seiner ursprünglichen Form besteht er aus fast sechs Stunden seltenen Archivmaterials, das im Laufe von dreißig Jahren aufgenommen wurde. Seit 1987 war diese vollständige Fassung nur in einigen wenigen Institutionen (der Library for the Performing Arts im Lincoln Center in New York City und dem Smithsonian) zu sehen. Im Jahr 2008 wurden die ersten drei Teile von Dehns Werk, die insgesamt zwei Stunden umfassen, neu gemastert und von Dancetime Publications auf DVD veröffentlicht.
Als der Savoy Ballroom 1958 zum letzten Mal seine Pforten schloss, entschied sich Dehn, Harlem zu verlassen, während sie ihre Arbeit fortsetzte. Daher wurde Teil 3 in der Public School 28 in Brooklyn und im Palladium in Manhattan gedreht. Darin wird Dehn Zeugin einer kompletten Revolution des Lindy Hop, vom Niedergang seiner Popularität in den frühen 1960er Jahren bis zu seinem Wiederaufleben Mitte der 1980er Jahre.
